چکیده

The orthopaedic service in Tunisia was opened in 1964 with 100 beds for a population of some five million people. Referrals included patients with Volkmann’s ischaemic contracture or with gangrene of the hand following supracondylar fracture of the humerus treated with the elbow in acute fiexion. It was thus incumbent upon us to develop a reliable method of treatment which would avoid these tragedies without blocking the limited bed space.

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF LATERAL APPROACH VERSUS P OSTERIOR APPROACH FOR THE SURGICAL TRE ATMENT OF SUPRACONDYLAR FRACTURES OF THE HUMERUS IN CHILDREN

Background: Supracondylar fracture of the humerus is the second most common fracture in children. For most cases closed reduction and percutaneous crossed pinning is recommended. Those patients who had previously undergone an unsuccessful closed reduction trial need open reduction and pin fixation, but the best surgical approach is questionable. Most surgeons apply the technique of posterio...

Risk factors of loss reduction after percutaneous fixation in supracondylar humerus in pediatric: a descriptive-analytical study

Background & Aims: supracondylar humerus fracture is one of the most common pediatric elbow fractures accounting for about 16% of the pediatric fractures. Loss of reduction is one of the complications after closed and percutaneous fixation. This research is aimed to investigate the factors involved in the loss of reduction. Method: In this descriptive study, the children with supracondylar hum...

Lateral entry compared with medial and lateral entry pin fixation for completely displaced supracondylar humeral fractures in children. Surgical technique.

BACKGROUND Closed reduction and percutaneous pin fixation is the treatment of choice for completely displaced (type-III) extension supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children, although controversy persists regarding the optimal pin-fixation technique. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of lateral entry pin fixation with that of medial and lateral entry pin fixation for...

Ultrasound-guided Percutaneous Medial Pinning of Pediatric Supracondylar Humeral Fractures to Avoid Ulnar Nerve Injury.

Background:  Medial pinning is one of the most controversial aspects of the surgical treatment of supracondylar fractures (SHF) owing to the risk of ulnar nerve injury.  Aim: To evaluate the safety and usefulness of medial pinning for SHF using ultrasound imaging for ulnar nerve visualization.   Methods: Fifteen children, with a mean age of 60 months, with displaced SHF were treated with a cros...

Systematic pinning of displaced extension-type supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children. A prospective study of 116 consecutive patients.

We report the results of 116 consecutive displaced extension supracondylar fractures of the elbow in children treated during the first two years after the introduction of the following protocol; closed reduction under general anaesthesia with fluoroscopic control and lateral percutaneous pinning using two parallel pins or, when closed reduction failed, open reduction and internal fixation by cr...
